today's new moon in aries & saturn enters aquarius
hallo bb,
happy new moon in aries!
I hope you’re doing ok and your loved ones are doing ok as we face the unknowns of this unprecedented time. I hope you are finding a little bit of space just to be. Or remember something funny. Or think of something nice. Or just take an extra nap. I hope that if you’re a healthcare work, an essential worker, still working out in the world at whatever you do that you feel supported and know that you’re currently holding up humanity with your grit and with your heart and with your laugh too.
I’m taking some time today on this new moon, which falls exactly on my descendant (the part of the chart which represents who and what and how completes us) to remember why I started sending these letters in the first place. I wanted to share what I was learning, to grow and to connect. with you! "the reader." I wanted to use these letters as a way to share something that reminded me of something else that reminded me to remind you that we’re all just little pieces of dust on a big round globe in the sky and astrology isn’t causal (it's divination!) and because of that it's something we can use to grow and be inspired. It’s something that if we let it, can help us feel seen.
we like things that we recognize. astrology recognizes us. It’s our reflection after all.
Anyway, there’s a new moon in Aries today. Yay! But first I want to talk about something else.
I want to talk about Saturn entering Aquarius. Saturn ––the planet of discipline, rules, boundaries, limitations, isolation etcetera etcetera–– rules two signs of the zodiac: Capricorn and Aquarius. Saturn says no. It’s a firm no.
Saturn in Capricorn is a stone castle. And it’s someone working inside of that stone castle. Endlessly. It’s David Bowie making music videos on his deathbed. It’s Zora Neale-Hurston strategically collecting folklore. It’s Greta Thunberg, alone on the steps of the Riksdag, in August 2018. Her sign, bold and black (both very Saturnian words) says “SKOLSTREJK FOR KLIMATET.” This is Saturn in Capricorn. The spell is showing up. The spell is doing the work. Over and over. Again and again.
Since December 2017, Saturn’s transit through Capricorn (while being co-present first with Pluto then also the cosmos’ garbage disposal the South Node, then also Jupiter and now also Mars) has shown us the darkest corners of our global society. What’s starving. Our fragile prisons. Our systems are breaking. All of the cracks are being exposed, weak and dusty. Foundational failings are seen in our corrupt governments, in the climate crisis, in our rigged economy. Yes, these things have existed for decades, they have existed for hundreds of years, for eons. But Saturn in Capricorn showed us exactly how cracked crumbling & tbqh, how COLD AND DRY all this stuff really is.
From March 9 - 21, Saturn was hovering at 29º Capricorn. 29º is the final degree of a sign (each sign takes up 30º in the zodiac) that planets must pass through before entering into the next one. The fancy word for this is: anaretic degree. If a planet has been traveling through a sign of its domicile (it’s “home sign” if you will) as Saturn is in Capricorn, we usually experience the planet throwing a bit of a tantrum as it reaches the anaretic degree. It loses control as it loses dignity.
For example, on January 2nd and 3rd as Mars ––planet of war–– sat at 29º Scorpio, its home sign: we experienced chaotic global tension when General Qasem Soleimani of Iran was assassinated by US forces. For a moment, it felt as if we were on the brink of World War III. We were and then suddenly we weren’t. Mars admitted defeat as it slid into enthusiastic Sagittarian obscurity.
But when Saturn is shifting from Capricorn to Aquarius, the ringed planet is not actually losing any dignity. It’s moving from one house it owns to the other house it owns. So at 29º Capricorn, Saturn is actually at its most protected and most powerful. Of course it’s still dealing with border crossing and baggage checks and getting quite temperamental nonetheless but the tantrum becomes her. The tantrum becomes a power move actually. And in this final degree of Capricorn, Saturn is able to truly enforce. Truly isolate. Truly set boundaries. From March 9-21, we saw Saturn in Capricorn take the wheel: exposing the mess of our systems and grinding society to a literal halt.
(Saturn says, “no.”)
Then finally on March 21, Saturn entered Aquarius. Our fixed air sign. And let's be real, there is no term more Aquarian than SOCIAL DISTANCE.
If Capricorn is the old crone toiling away behind the safety of the palace walls then Aquarius is the sage circling the perimeter of the castle, keeping an eye on the kingdom. Saturn in Aquarius observes everything. Notices every detail. Follows every plot. Aquarius knows what’s up okay??? Aquarius doesn’t set boundaries by building walls. Aquarius sets boundaries by taking space.
An Aquarius only enters a situation if they believe their contribution matters.
Social distance does not mean we “keep a distance” from being “social.” It means we remain social at a distance. (Right now, that distance is at least six feet. In the future, that could be more or less, up to us). Social distance means we show up where we must be. We show up where we are needed. We show up when we feel moved. Instead of feeling locked into an obligation, we bring what we can to the table. When we go somewhere, we don’t go to be seen. We go to collect. We go to participate.
Saturn in Aquarius knows that we can participate from a distance. Because our voices can be heard, even from far away. Funny how everyone can hear when there's less noise.
The last time Saturn was in Aquarius was February 7, 1991 through January 28, 1994 (with a brief dip out from May 22 - June 30, 1993). If you were born between these dates, you are now starting your first Saturn Return (when the ringed planet returns to see how far you’ve come & let you know how much further you’ve got to go. It’s a time of accepting mortality, embracing adulthood and accepting your deepest flaws as a challenge and a fact).
The public internet is also starting its first Saturn Return. It premiered on August 6, 1991. How will the internet grow up? How will it make humans grow up along with it?
How do we send our messages not into the void but into the air?
From now through June 30 ––when Saturn dips back into Capricorn until December 2020–– we have a chance to preview the future. Who we are when we’re not productive. Who we are when we come together. Who we are when we’re really looking out and looking up! Our scopes are getting wider. Our bodies are grounded and our voices are clear in the dark. It’s time to be volunteers and to be stars.
This leads me back to what's going on this morning (March 24) at 5:27 am. There’s a new moon at 4º Aries. This new moon is conjunct Chiron, the wounded healer: holding space for our deepest wounds allows us to own up to our greatest strengths.
This new moon is ruled by Mars. Mars is currently conjunct Pluto planet of alchemical transformation. What separates us is decaying. What brings us together is still fire, soon gold.
This new moon is sextile Saturn. The future is offering its steady support. Aries is our most energetic sign–– ready to hit the ground running (how many Zoom parties for Aries season have y’all been invited to so far? I’ve personally lost count…)
Aries earnestly wants to set the tone, to do the right thing. Aries wants to win & also wants to make you smile if you lose. But Aries also lacks patience. Luckily, Saturn has nothing but patience.
It’s ok to want to do as much as you want or as little as you want, to hit the ground running or not. To make something happen or not. Saturn wants you to be patient. Saturn wants you to value stillness. Saturn wants to remind that this isn’t temporary. To remind you that things are better when they’re built to last. It’s time for some durable enthusiasm.
This new moon is also square the two lunar nodes ––points of fate & karma. It’s a trigger for the eclipses that happened on Christmas and on January 10 and will happen again this summer in June and July. What happens now is karmic. What happens now is meant to be. No matter what happens remember that where you are is where you are. You are here. So proceed with humility & grace. Grow into something worth growing into. Easy, right?

if you don’t know your rising sign, reading for your sun sign is totally fine.
there’ll be something there <3 (there might be something in all of them)
these are meant to be nuggets to chew.
hopefully, there’s some bite.
these horoscopes are meant to be found.

Aries
Propagate, bb.
Lucky you! this new moon wants you to do just that: be you.
And people are willing to listen to you right now.
So tell them what you think.
Spread your ideas like a goddamn wildfire, be aggressive, who cares?
The world’s on fire and so are you but yr fire has something to say.
Despite all your confidence, you’ve occasionally let yourself become your own worst enemy
But what if you smiled at the mirror instead?
What if you laughed at those silly songs?
That knife does not go in your heart.
Taurus
Lead, bb.
I’m going to tell you two contradictory things which are
Right now you are supposed to be not just a boss but the boss
And right now you are really, really, really just supposed to take a nap.
Maybe you can multitask or maybe there’s something to it ––being at a remove––
That lasts beyond the so-called quarantine
A fireside chat should be a voice in the dark that leads us toward the light.
So why don’t you let yourself relax as you address the nation?
You love pleasure but you never let yourself relax.
You have space––now, give yourself some time.
Gemini
Dream, bb.
Relief comes as a promise of knowledge.
You can’t go right now so how can you make the most of your stay.
Phone ––and I can’t stress this enough–– a friend.
(I know you already are all the time everyday but who do you really want on your Favorites list at the end of the world???)
You always want to be a part of every group
But you constantly resist becoming truly known
It’s like you want to be a part but you're always apart
And it doesn’t quite work out that way.
Your duty is to be involved so sign up!
Cancer
Share, bb.
The “pressure” is off but there’s still a lot to figure out, ok?
Circumstances can’t be ignored but neither can what isn’t adding up
What is it? The bank balance? Your lifeline?
(It might be time to pick a different emergency contact, fyi).
Maybe you feel disappointed because you were getting somewhere
Well, the debut’s cancelled
Mourn but remember you are part of a galaxy that still remains, that is not going away
You have so much to give and you don’t have to keep them waiting.
Forget the release date.
Send your words away.
Leo
Commit, bb.
Things are getting quite real on the relationship front.
You know exactly who you’re with (you’re in a room together or you’re not)
And the future is looking like both a rainbow and a slab of pavement.
(Remember to draw with chalk on the sidewalk)
Today’s new moon is about zooming wayyyyyyyyyyy out
Why doesn’t everyone tell you that you’re their favorite teacher?
Because you should be. Just because your ex once said you were a lousy TA
doesn’t mean she knows anything about you actually.
When you share your resources, tell them what it means.
Virgo
Serve, bb.
You have mastered the art of “that selfless thing”
And you of course were made for this moment.
You were made to be of service
But how can you crochet your responsibility to self with your responsibility to other into a scarf
That won’t just be worn but will be passed down for generations? Think about it.
Today’s new moon has you collecting things for redistribution.
Money comes in and money goes out
And makes you aware of just who and what and how those resources feel like rain
(or a subtle hint of lemon in the garnish of your third soup of the day)
Don’t hold yourself back from collaborating.
Libra
Create, bb.
There is so much that you want to make but for the last three years,
You’ve focused instead on what could go wrong.
Sabotaging your pleasure for your lazy mind’s delight.
One failed flirtation doesn’t mean you should never flirt again
(and who wants that fog to reveal flesh anyway?)
For some reason, you’re not seeing yourself as a partner right now
Even though no one quite gets the word tandem like you
And though you can’t ride a bike with your hair in the wind today, without a care
You can ask what you can do.
Stop doubting that you’ll show up as an equal.
Scorpio
Root, bb.
Saturn wants you to clean your room. Or call dad. Or reckon with a message
left by your ancestors and currently occupying
the dustiest corner of your house: to the left of his toothbrush
What’s getting in your way? Heed the call.
The tasks at hand are enough of a hassle, I know.
You are doing the good work and fighting the good fight.
And today’s new moon is about appreciating
How much is in your control
At least in your own tiny world
There’s extra care in each bite of butter and each stir of the spoon
Sagittarius
Connect, bb.
Though it seems like you’re checking in,
You’re actually checking out.
It’s time to refine the way you communicate. Saturn says.
You’re saying a lot but what are you really saying anyway?
Convey the message clearly.
Meanwhile, you might as well collage while you’re in quarantine
You might as well do something romantic for fun
No one’s watching so do what you WANT, bb
When each thought is too precious, glee becomes painful
Remember: you create your world.
Capricorn
Eat, bb.
Your personal renovation is finally (almost) over
So it’s time to collect what you need and bring it close
Right now: what you need is snacks
Of heart and mind and tongue
Something’s been feeling impersonal at home
Like you’ve never allowed yourself to get to know your space
Now you can’t look away
Accept your couch for all its flaws
The blanket feels good even if they're not what you want
You are the messenger of your ancestor's dreams
Aquarius
Stand up, bb.
Saturn has arrived at your doorstep
And though you’ve had this feeling your whole life
It hasn’t been like this before (at least not for almost 30 years)
Time to reacquaint with yourself
The new moon wants you to dig into the archives
And discover the pain and joy that those memories hold
Let the nostalgia demon become you. Because “why not?”
Read every page of the journal and flip through every photo in the album
even the pages you always skip out of boredom or sacrifice
Eye tuned to hidden treasure
Pisces
Let go, bb.
You can’t control what’s happening now
So why even try?
You have to learn to take space for yourself
Or you’re never going to get that grease off your heart
The new moon wants a get rich quick scheme
Or a good meal. What can you provide?
Don’t let go of the jars that sustain you
Keep them for when things are truly lean
Kneel before your values and worship what’s becoming yours.
