“Greetings loved ones. Let’s take a journey.” - Snoop Dogg
It’s May 10, 2022 and today at 7:22 pm EDT, Jupiter enters Aries. The gas giant will be in Aries from May 10, 2022 through October 28, 2022 and then again from December 20, 2022 through May 16, 2023. Jupiter is our Big Sky Daddy, our planet of growth, abundance, expansion, and opportunity. Jupiter brings a sense of big-ness, of largesse to whatever houses and planets he’s transiting in our chart. Jupiter creates wide open spaces. Though bigger isn’t always better, Aries is better than any other sign at getting the party started so yes, this is a Sweet Sixteen that will never be forgotten. Jupiter in the cardinal fire sign is for sending those invitations with confidence, initiating our zaniest dreams, and being, well, a bit extra.
Have you been looking for a sign to go for it? Well, this is it.
Jupiter spends about a year in each sign. I often refer to someone’s Jupiter sign as their “class” because most people in our “grade” from K-12 share this placement. On a micro-generational level, it speaks of collective dreams, goals and visions; it’s the stuff that we want to elevate, enliven and both literally and metaphorically blow up. It’s what and how and who we look up to. Our Jupiter sign also shows our luck, both good and bad. Those born with Jupiter in Aries get lucky when they go for it, take a risk, and charge ahead. Highs and lows come with expressing their individuality. Opportunities grow when instead of following the crowd, they go their own way.
It takes twelve years for Jupiter to return to the same place in the zodiac so Jupiter was last in Aries from June 6, 2010 - September 8, 2010, and again from January 22, 2011 through June 4, 2011. What part of your life was growing at that time? What seas were parting? What opportunities were presenting themselves? Which desires were suddenly non-negotiable? To note: Uranus—planet of revolution and disruption—also entered Aries in Spring 2010 so whatever Jupiter was stirring up at that time was likely loud, shocking and innovative. Uranus is not co-present with Big Daddy Jup this time so things won’t be quite as explosive. But still, this ingress is occurring during Eclipse season, and on the same day that Mercury stations retrograde. There’s a lot to process and a lot at stake, and this ingress might just be the kick in the pants we need to get moving. To make our dream come true of going to a place where the grass is really greener.
Keeping in mind that Jupiter in Aries brings a certain energy, drive and devotion to your life, as well as the resonances with the general vibe of 2010-11, it’s important to also consider what part of your life is receiving this boost. So now let’s look at how Jupiter in Aries is hitting your chart based on your rising sign.
(If you’re unsure of what your rising sign is, you can check that here.)
Aries - 1st house of self, identity, image, health, and vitality.
Taurus - 12th house of the collective, unconscious, institutions, corporations, “tech,” “film,” the not self, mental dis-ease, solitude, retreats, the void, escape, and shadow work.
Gemini - 11th house of community, networks, dreams, visions, goals, “the group art show,” and your fans/audience.
Cancer - 10th house of career, public image, recognition, status, leadership, culmination, and “the king.”
Leo - 9th house of long distance travel, academia, fame, legacy, religion, spirituality, astrology, and publishing.
Virgo - 8th house of shared resources, loans, debts, taxes, donors, patrons, inheritances, and power dynamics.
Libra - 7th house of relationships, partnerships, contracts, agreements, adversaries, other people, reflections, and embodied performance.
Scorpio - 6th house of errands, labor, routines, work, physical dis-ease, service, activism, and small pets.
Sagittarius - 5th house of romance, creativity, fun (!), recreation, games, risks, sexuality, children, and pleasure of all kinds.
Capricorn- 4th house of home, family, foundation, privacy, the land itself, and conclusions.
Aquarius- 3rd house of local environment, short trips, siblings, close friends, transportation, rituals, early education, columns, periodicals, projects and folk magic.
Pisces - 2nd house of money, resources, assets, taste, shopping, spending, feeding, nourishing and self esteem.
Jupiter in Aries will be especially impactful for those with cardinal rising signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn), as well as Sagittarius and Leo risings who will get a boost in their expression. If you were born in 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963, 1951 or 1939 this is your Jupiter return so this transit will highlight the promise of your natal Jupiter. From now until October 28 (when Jupiter goes back into Pisces for a final two months of that transit), those with planets and angles from 0º-8º Aries will feel this transit the hardest. If you want to take a closer look at what this transit means for you, I encourage you to book a reading with me!
Another thing to remember: Jupiter transits aren’t just about our little selves. They’re a reflection of the time, the world, the culture. Going back to the last time Jupiter was in Aries in 2010-11, think about not only what was happening to you, but what was happening in the world? What were you into then? Culturally and politically. To refresh your memory: Summer 2010 was the Summer of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream (her best and most packed with hits album), the summer that birthed One Direction on the X Factor, and the summer that Apple released the iPhone4, or the first smartphone with “FaceTime.”
“Airplanes” by B.o.B. (feat. Hayley Williams), a song which includes the lyrics “I could use a dream or a genie or a wish to go back to a place much simpler than this”; Break Your Heart” by Taio Cruz, a song about a self-amused heartbreaker, and Michael Bublé’s “I Just Haven’t Met You Yet,” a song about an overconfident romantic (all sooooo Jupiter in Aries) played endlessly on the radio. (I should know. I worked at a café that summer where, much to my indie kid chagrin, we were only allowed to play Top 40. I would often rebel by playing the “Rock” station on SiriusXM. Again. So Jupiter in Aries).
When Jupiter returned to Aries (after a brief break back in Pisces) in early 2011 further transit typical pop culture moments included Charlie Sheen being fired from Two and a Half Men after making hot-headed and disparaging comments about the series creator, and Game of Thrones premiering on HBO.
Summer 2010 also brought heavy protests at the G8 Summit in Toronto, the “end” of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the overturning of Prop 8. Then in the Spring of 2011, the ingress coincided with the beginning of the Egyptian Revolution and Arab Spring, as well as the Bahraini uprising and protests in Libya against al-Gaddafi. News spread that Osama bin Laden had been assassinated on May 2, 2011: the day that Mars conjoined Jupiter in Aries.
We fight for freedom when Jupiter is in Aries. For better or worse, surrender is not an option. We’re inspired to fight for our own rights and for the rights of those we want to protect. Jupiter in Aries tends to bring political revolution and mass protests in response to attacks on individual rights. Think: the custody and asylum dispute over Elian Gonzalez (1999), the LGBTQ March on Washington (1987), or the last gasps of the Vietnam War (1975). Jupiter was, of course, also in Aries in 1963-64 during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement, including the Birmingham Campaign and the March on Washington. The Civil Rights Act was signed just after Jupiter left Aries in 1964. This was also the year of JFK’s assassination on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. A further resonance with 1963 is that Saturn was in Aquarius just as it is now. The Saturnian responsibility of building egalitarian social structures combined with the Jupiterian passion to get things done brought rapid and expansive social change in 1963. Change that did, on some levels, last. But many also fought hard against these changes. When Jupiter is in Aries, everyone is loud. Especially the people who are very wrong. With the current state of *gestures wildly at everything*, the Summer of 2022 is shaping up to look a lot like the Summer of 1963. It’s worth spending time this spring defining what you’re willing (and aren’t willing) to fight for and who you’re ready to defend. Practice speaking all the way to the back of the room so those demands can be heard.
On a lighter note, speaking of yelling, Jupiter in Aries also brings out the fangirl in all of us. Through my research, I’ve discovered that this transit is the absolute peak for all kinds of “boy bands” (using a very wide definition of this term, but you’ll see what I mean). 2010 brought One Direction, and in 1999, we were in the heart of the N*SYNC and Backstreet Boys era. During the 1987-88 Jupiter transit through Aries, we had New Kids on the Block, Run DMC, the Beastie Boys and Ricky Martin’s Menudo (to note: “Livin’ La Vida Loca” topped the charts while Jupiter next in Aries in 1999). Jupiter was also in Aries on February 9, 1964 when the Beatles played the Ed Sullivan show at the height of Beatlemania. Unabashed individualism becomes iconic when Jupiter is in Aries. Fame and admiration focus on the persona. Celebrity crushes run the risk of being major projections. But isn’t it fun to be so passionate about something? To seek out autographs? To swoon?
It must be emphasized that Jupiter in Aries encourages art that is very personal. Relatable yet fantastical. In these times, we express what we want to express. We make altars for our individuality. Hope and speed are our defining values. For example, Springsteen’s Born to Run (1975) and Bon Jovi’s “Livin on a Prayer” (1987) were released while Jupiter was in Aries. I Love Lucy premiered while Jupiter in Aries in 1951 (I mean, come on, a show about a loud and hilarious red-headed woman absolutely desperate to be a star); Chicago debuted on Broadway while Jupiter was in Aries in 1975 (a musical about … leveraging murder into iconic fame…); and Arcade Fire released The Suburbs while Jupiter was in Aries in 2010 (an album about … being the main character in your own impatient, monotonous story). Though we’re certainly in an era where individualism has been weaponized, celebrity has poisoned politics, and influencer marketing has turned “living” into “marketing”, Jupiter in Aries comes as a reminder that there are juicier and more positive ways to share what’s personal. We can make art that is self-obsessed, but also, maybe…good? Wanting to be important is relatable and it’s time to tell those stories in a generous way. So what are you excited to share?
As far as romance: how we love during Jupiter in Aries can be boiled down to Julia Stiles’ Kat’s love for Heath Ledger’s Patrick in 10 Things I Hate About You (1999). Petulant and passionate all at once. (Both actors born with the Sun in Aries, and the movie, of course, premiered while Jupiter was in Aries.)
For those unfamiliar, 10 Things I Hate About You is such a Jupiter in Aries story. It’s a 90’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. It follows riot grrrl-adjacent, Sarah Lawrence bound, high school senior Kat (Julia Stiles) as she unexpectedly falls for school bad boy Patrick (Heath Ledger). After almost 90 minutes of scrappy romantic pursuits, the two finally kiss after, of course, a rousing game of paintball. But just as the lovers find happily ever after, Kat finds out that Patrick’s advances were not genuine, at least in origin. His flirtations were actually all part of a plot to ensure that her beauty queen little sister Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) could go to the prom. Through all the games and drama though, Kat and Patrick, an unlikely pair, both too self-assured for their own good, really did fall in love. As the film’s action winds down, Kat reads this poem to her English class, finally admitting to her big feels:
“I hate the way you talk to me and the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare; I hate your big dumb combat boots and the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme. I hate the way you’re always right. I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry. I hate it that you’re not around. And the fact that you didn’t call. But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you, not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.”
The movie ends with the two making out in a parking lot while a rock band plays on the roof. This is how we do romance with Jupiter in Aries. It’s also how we go after that job and make that cash. Jupiter in Aries suffers no fools and bristles at the idea of losing the self just to have another. Jupiter in Aries says, “I’m wonderful already so what exactly do you have to offer?” More than anything, Jupiter in Aries knows that institutions do not love us back. Loyalty should be with those who actually show up, starting with ourselves. We’re not afraid to sing, on a date or on a job interview, “I want you to want me” but we need the object of our desire to sing it right back.
As Jupiter enters Aries today, it joins Venus in the sign of the ram, and in a few weeks, Mars will join the party in Aries as well. There hasn’t been this much emphasis on the Aries part of our chart (see rising sign breakdown above) since Mars’ retrograde in Aries in September - November, 2020. Back in 2020, the Aries part of our chart was up for major review, revision and recalibration. Whatever passions or conflicts took hold, this period led to overheating, exhaustion and frustration as we faced constant challenges in this area of our life. Now with Jupiter in Aries, we can look at this part of our life with fresh eyes, clear the scorched earth, and get excited for growth and opportunities. Venus’ co-presence with Jupiter adds sweetness, connection and somewhat cringe-y romance to the mix while Mars’ co-presence adds even more aggression and ambition. Mars and Jupiter make an exact conjunction at 3º Aries on May 29th. Expect big ideas forming now to gain even more traction then.
Though Jupiter is not at home in Aries like he is in Pisces, he’s well-connected, up on the trends, and able to easily exert influence where he sees fit. He’s not the boss but his results are visible and undeniable. Hopefully this is exciting and inspiring news for those of us who experienced Jupiter’s transit through his home sign of Pisces as a bit lacking or unimpressive. It’s likely that we’ll see more of the “gains” from the Jupiter in Pisces transit (May-July, 2021, December-May, 2022) now as Jupiter exits the dreamy, mutable waters. Though Jupiter is in domicile in Pisces, the effects are more about rest, restoration and rehabilitation. Jupiter in Pisces wants us to slow down, to find hope in the rainiest days. Jupiter in Aries has an action-oriented approach. For better or for worse, we’re getting things done. “Why not take a crazy chance?” (-Hilary Duff, born with Jupiter in Aries)
May this Jupiter in Aries bring you big money-making opportunities you can’t refuse, causes worth fighting for, audiences hungry for your hilarious stories, a sexy crush, honors to defend, moments to make wishes out of airplanes, a cupcake bra, hotheaded gummy bears on your team, and the defeat of all the fascists, government drones and religious extremists attacking reproductive, LGBTQ and BIPOC rights, as well as…the fucking earth itself with their bigoted bullshit. I’ll see you on the streets, at the game, and in the club. Let’s have some fun while we’re yelling about it. :)
xoxo, Jaime
