The New Moon in Capricorn is on December 30, 2024 at 5:26 pm ET. An auspicious new moon to usher in 2025, a very strange year. This a year that starts slow. Mercury is emerging from retrograde shadow, Mars is retrograde. Repeat after me: it’s ok to admit I’m burned out. 2025 is sure to be a life changing year for all of us. The outer planets are changing and so can we. My plan is to slowly wade into the year with vibes checked and map in hand. If you want to join me in this slow dance, please sign up for 2025: A Strange Year — part ritual, part workshop, part gossip sesh to prepare for this wild year to come.

As someone born in the 1988-1991 “Cap Stack” micro generation, with Saturn in Capricorn prominently placed in my chart, and raised in a very Saturnian family by a mother with a Capricorn moon, I feel deeply connected to Capricorn energy on the daily.
The New Moon in Capricorn always feels like a very special moment in the year, and today’s (which goes exact at 5:26 PM ET on December 30) is significant.
First of all, this new moon falls at 9º of Capricorn, a part of the zodiac associated with Tarot’s 2 of Pentacles. The card depicts a man standing in front of the rolling sea, juggling two giant coins. The Golden Dawn called this card Change.
What are we doing during this first part of Capricorn season, the liminal days between December 22 and January 2? We’re embracing the change of the new year. The autumn is when we harvest the plants as they die and fall apart, but the winter is when everything is still and bare. From that death comes the seeds of new life.
I’ve never understood Capricorn more than when I drove cross country over the week between Christmas and New Year’s. Beyond the interstate, the land was still and muddy. Completely barren yet ready to burst with life. Water carving space for something solid to be revealed much later. The first decan of Capricorn is for prospecting. It’s about choosing a place to grow. A seed needs good soil and great water. It’s not about a finished product, it’s for becoming.
Another thing to know about this New Moon in Capricorn is that it’s ruled by Saturn in Pisces. Capricorn enjoys quality goods and Pisces enjoys quality dreams. For the “adults” in the room (the ones Antoine de Saint-Exupéry admonishes in Le Petit Prince for thinking its a drawing of a hat rather than a boa constrictor swallowing an elephant), the Capricorn-Pisces dream might seem too big, too unfathomable, too unreasonable to exist. What sensible person takes love and art and happiness so seriously?
A heaven-sent cultural avatar for this moment is, of course, Timothée Chalamet. (Or who some might call the last living movie star, who also happens to be a dorky Gen Z fan boy.) Chalamet was born December 27, 1995, during this liminal first part of Capricorn season, and while Saturn was in Pisces. He is a Virgo rising with a Capricorn stellium and a Pisces Moon. His recent PR parade for A Complete Unknown includes a long form record store romp with the enigmatic Canadian journalist Narduwar. Timothée is extremely charming in his desire to impress Narduwar throughout these 50 (!) recorded minutes. His nervous flow is inspiring in these strange times.
This is the first New Moon in the seagoat’s sign since 2007 (!) free from the influence of Pluto. What does a fresh start even feel like without all the Plutonian decay? Virgo rising Timothée is experiencing fresh growth in his fifth house of true love and desire. Watching his Narduwar interview, it’s clear that beyond the accolades he’ll likely receive for playing Bob Dylan, doing this weird little press stop is fulfilling a silly personal dream. He’s having fun. Right now all the Virgo risings are having fun in ways they haven’t since 2008. All of us, in that Capricorn part of life, are getting a much needed new beginning. Here’s where this New Moon is breathing new life for each (rising) sign:
Aries - career, public image, leadership, visibility
Taurus - travel, education, vision, mind-expanding dreams
Gemini - collaboration, shared resources, debts, power dynamics
Cancer - partnerships, commitments, contracts
Leo - service, maintenance, work, managing health
Virgo - creativity, play, romance, true love
Libra - foundations, home, family, privacy
Scorpio - rituals, skills, communication, familiar environment
Sagittarius - money, resources, income, values, self esteem
Capricorn - image, style, identity, health
Aquarius - surrender, the unconscious, introspection, solitude
Pisces - community, friends, audience, success, dreams
What seeds are you ready to plant? Remember: change starts with an impulse. This is only the beginning. 2025 is not a year to hit the ground running. This is a January when we must acknowledge burn out, slow down, and, in our time, plant roots. The harvest is later.
Calendar time is a long con, but I will say that, if you’re hellbent on setting resolutions for the “new” “year,” then Friday, January 3 (when the moon conjoins Venus in Pisces <3) is a great day for that.

gag - my mom also has moon in cap (in the 3rd, squaring mars in libra). she is always manifesting things she claims not to want, and perennially claiming powerlessness. very interesting for my not heavily aspected but still weighty capricorn 12th house !!! i’m loving the “time to decide where to plant” idea. having covid for the millionth time again is driving home that im called to plant even more deeply in my body / a fully, fearlessly embodied sense of self this year and align that with my commitment to stepping into healthy leadership. ugh lol thank you jaime for your work!
