horoscopes for the new moon in taurus
Astrology is an art, a study and a practice of time. Cycles initiate, wax, wane and repeat. Astrologers (like me) study the movement of planets, stars and other celestial bodies so we can report to you (dear reader) on the quality of time. Let you know it’s raining so you take an umbrella or it’s sunny so you wear SPF. This week—astrologically, at least—is sunny and 70ºF. Perhaps the brightest it’s been since late 2019. Bright meaning generous. So much of the astrology of 2020 reflected total collapse. So much of the astrology of 2021 reflects rapid restructuring. This week (before the return of chaos later this month), we have the opportunity to ground our feet into the earth and consider where we really want to go. Today at 2:59 pm EST, there’s a New Moon in Taurus. Taurus is the antithesis of instability. This is a chance to move ahead without much cosmic interference. To shout a plan from the rooftop and actually make good on it.
The primary reason this week is so lovely and juicy is because on the 13th (just two little days from now), Jupiter enters Pisces. Jupiter (aka Jove, aka Zeus, aka Jup-Jup) is the planet of growth, expansion and wisdom. Jupiter is knowledge. Jupiter is the guru. We learn from Jupiter to spread our wings and fly away. Since December 2, 2019, Jupiter has been traveling through Saturn’s signs: Capricorn and Aquarius. With Jupiter co-present and answering to tough guy Saturn over the last year and a half, for every step forward, there’s been several steps back. Scrutiny & delay. Responsibility and growth come as a package deal. As Jupiter enters Pisces, we’re reminded of the pleasure in possibility.
Jupiter is at home in Pisces. Mutable water. Where he dives into the ocean's depths and swims to the edges of time. Anything’s possible because everything’s possible. Pisces has a reputation for embracing the limitless. For forgetting where one ends and the other begins. With Jupiter in Pisces, we get a major boost of serotonin. We’re drunk on freedom and it won’t last forever. Jupiter goes retrograde in mid-June and re-enters Aquarius by late July. For now though, the good times are about to roll.
Today’s New Moon in Taurus comes before Jupiter in Pisces hits though. We’re on a different wavelength today. A fixed one. A steady one. Taurus is our fixed earth sign. Taurus believes that when you finish roasting the chicken, you lick the fat off the pan. Nothing is over until Taurus says it's over.
Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet not only of love and connection but of strategy. Venus entered the intellectual and curious sign of Gemini on the 8th, joining Mercury (who is at home) in the sign of the trickster. This isn’t a slow meal over a campfire. We need to think fast to get what we want out of this New Moon. We need to claim our desires with a sense of humor. Announce our ambitions with confident self-awareness. Utilize emphasis and emojis with the finesse of Cher (the Twittergoddess among us was born with the sun in Taurus and Venus in Gemini).
I may contradict myself here (as Gemini tends to do, containing multitudes). We’re licking the fat off the pan but it’s not a slow meal over a campfire? OK, what I’m really trying to say is that: what we’re acting on now has been gestating for a long time. You ever spend five hours cooking dinner and then finish it before you even get through the opening credits of the tv show you’re watching as you eat? But then you remember that flavor for the rest of your life? That’s the vibe.
Venus was last in Gemini—due to a retrograde—for an extended period (April 3 - August 7, 2020). What ideas and connections were filling you to the brim last spring and summer and how can they be further developed now? What poems are you ready to write? What stories are you ready to tell? (A poem could be changing your job and a story could be starting a relationship. I enjoy lyricism but often life is more to the point.) Retrogrades give us time to brew our thoughts like an herbal tincture but not always time to act. Now we can make something happen. With Mercury also in Gemini (where the communication planet goes retrograde later this month) and with eclipse season (which lights up the Gemini part of our chart) coming in two weeks, our curiosities are truly unavoidable. Today’s New Moon lets us assert our thesis statement from a grounded (and thrillingly triumphant) place. As we continue, we prove our point.
To return at last to Jupiter (who is not yet in Pisces): the expansion planet is sitting at the final degree of Aquarius as this lunation perfects. Planets at the final degree of a sign are called “anaretic” which is a word that once meant “ill fortune” but now really means fated. Planets at the last degree of a sign are on their way out, crossing the border. But they contain so much of what has come before. They’ve been through it all. The whole sign. Something has been growing with us since December. The intentions we set at this New Moon come from careful consideration. We’re ready to flourish.
Use this New Moon to:
-Write 2000 words of a new project
-Pick up a book from that growing pile
-Put down a deposit
-Book a flight
-Begin a practice of pulling a tarot card everyday
-Pay off a debt or carry a new one
-Make a date with the one that you thought got away
-Say “no”
-Say “yes”
-Brew a cup of tea and drink it slowly without distraction
-Check out a new spot in the neighborhood
-Vision board a future home
-Put a trip on the calendar
-Start wearing a signature scent
-Cook the first of many meals in your new kitchen
Eclipse season is coming (it’s really already begun) and after this New Moon, tumult lies ahead. Today, you’re allowed to be steady like a rock. So be steady like a rock. Set something up that you want to be with you for a long time. Take advantage of the blessing. Rest if that's what you need! It’s like remembering your vitamins or making a new best friend.
xo, Jaime

Aries
Today’s new moon puts a hunger inside you. Propels desire. Initiates the sacral. You’re so driven but this isn’t really about your “success” or “career” or even your money (though it could be about money, on a mundane level). What this is really about is your satisfaction. What keeps you satisfied? What meals? Which adventures? Do your social currencies carry you upstream? Today is for sitting with your values and what you value. Appreciating your collections and laying off what empties your cup. I can’t stress enough the importance of objects right now. Things. The power of touch and of admiration. When you look at something, really look at it. When you hear something, really listen. When you taste something, really savor.
Keeping sacred collections is especially important as Jupiter enters Pisces on the 13th. This transit over the next few months is one for sanctuary building and altar keeping. It’s for communing with spirits and keeping a low profile. This may feel antithetical to the general notion of “getting back into the game” that’s so pervasive right now. But accept the power of solitude as a choice rather than a mandate. You want to keep the mystery alive, right?
Taurus
Dressed in your best silks, your overflowing robes. Today’s new moon is just for you. Everyone else is setting intentions about a place they go, a person they see, an objective for living a better life. You’re setting an intention that’s by for and about you. Your body, your flesh and (even) your bones. Claim your authenticity. Claim your personality. Claim your body! Accept your ebbs and flows. YES: Confidence is always a challenge. Especially as you deal with fluctuations in your experience of reality (we all are but you in particular). You don’t want to change but at this point do you REALLY WANT TO STAY THE SAME? You don’t actually. Use this lunation to sit in the dark corners of your own mind. So many blessings are already within.
Self-reflection is necessary but it isn’t easy. Processing requires a total reboot. That’s why Jupiter’s dive into Pisces on the 13th gives you a fresh operating system and reminds you of all your adoring fans. Base level: optimism. Just in time. You have their attention because of what you have to share. Even if you have nothing to say, your generosity is implied. Your friends are here to catch you so rest easy knowing that you have a lifeline. Not everyone is so lucky.
Gemini
If you were to put everything that matters to you in a jar—well, what would you put inside? Taurus is your twelfth house: a place where we lose control or (more accurately) where we never had control in the first place. Complete assimilation is an absolute impossibility. But don’t you thrive in this mode anyway? Inside the cabinets of curiosity? Today’s new moon is for considering where you are when you aren’t really here. It’s for letting yourself drift off without judgment. It’s also for making a plan to pull yourself out of the depths. Diving deep and returning to shore. Taurus is the place where you polish the jewels, make snow angels in the sand of the desert and keep the oasis on reserve.
Your star-meter is on the rise as Jupiter dips into Pisces on the 13th. Experiments you’ve been attending for the last few years are ready to be unleashed upon the world. Take the praise. Take the note. Accept the overflowing edible arrangement that comes with your accolade. The next few months have you showing up to worship the ocean and being worshipped in return.
Cancer
Today’s new moon is your chance to make a wish and cast a spell of protection. Who’s waiting in the mud as you do a trust fall? Who volunteers to hold your hand? You don’t need to share your ideas with everyone. Take comfort in those who matter and who want to listen. Close the circle. Whether that’s an audience of thousands, millions or your ever-supportive writer's circle. the group chat. This new moon is about asking for feedback and taking it to heart. So don’t solicit the opinion of someone you don’t respect. With Mercury and Venus moving through Gemini (and eclipse season on its way), there’s a clue that you should honor stillness. Worship at the edge. Embrace enigma. Spook like a ghost. What’s hidden is extremely fertile so take your dreams on retreat. Announcements you make hold a lot of weight right now. Your adoring fans are desperate for news from your ship on the water.
Jupiter’s dive into Pisces on the 13th is medicine for you. A balm of wisdom. A cup of divinatory healing. You’re learning to map your own course this year and adjusting to fresh power dynamics. You exalt Jupiter (in your sign, the giant, gaseous planet becomes a great lake). The more you study, the more you can live authentically. Enjoy!
Leo
2021 has been a humbling journey for you, Leo. And though today’s new moon in Taurus represents a calm, breezy sunrise for your career: you must accept that you can’t do this alone. Your partner(s) in crime are integral to what’s next. Resonance comes in conversation. You may have to let something go: a friendship, a bad habit, an attitude, to get what you want from this new moon. Claiming your fame means accepting that you’re a role model too. People aren’t just looking at you; they’re looking up to you.. It also wouldn’t hurt to show your work. To make a list of everyone who’s supported you and include your citations with your acceptance speech. You’re made of stars: both your inspirations and your enemies. Thank them and everyone in between for contributing to the masterpiece. (But fuck the haters. Forever and always.)
Jupiter’s shift into Pisces on the 13th further emphasizes the power dynamics in your life. It makes it so you can’t look away. Pisces is your 8th house of shared resources, inheritance and residue. And though this isn’t the most comfortable place to hang out, Jupiter makes it nice. Gives you things. A steak dinner. A bespoke perfume. Just keep a tally of any favors you owe in return.
Virgo
A flight is on the books for you and whether you’re coming home or leaving the nest for good, you’re in for some culture shock. Taurus is the part of your chart that represents exploration! Manifestation! Divination! God! At this new moon, you’re staring at an extra large spread of cards, a jumbo celtic cross—but what is your question...really? This new moon is about leaving some of the answers open ended. It’s about appreciating where you’re currently at: on a blanket in the park with your friends. You want a diploma for what you’ve accomplished this year. You want justice. You want freedom. But won’t you miss this journey when it’s over? Whether you’re starting a sabbatical or ending one, it’s easy to romanticize what’s next rather than appreciating what’s here. Your voice is what has the value so use this lunation to prepare the syllabus of your mind.
Labor has been a constant this year. With both Saturn and Jupiter keeping home in your house of the daily grind. But what about connection? Isn’t that also a job? Jupiter enters Pisces and your relationship sector on the 13th. A steady reminder that you shouldn't do it all alone. Who can help you bake the bread? Who do you want buttering each slice? Feeding you? Telling you it's all going to be ok?
Libra
Venus is your ruling planet. So why are you so rattled when her other domicile (some might say her preferred domicile) is in the spotlight? Taurus’ domain is one of the murkier corners of your chart. The eighth house: where we inherit gold and encounter ghosts. Tricky situations only. Sure, your ghost collection is as friendly as they come. Sweet even. Dressed in next season’s Gucci. But at this time of year, the ghosts are as persistent as a spam call about the expiring warranty on “your” “car.” Streaming services sneaking up on your bank statement. Consider how many of these subscriptions you want to renew. This lunation is for celebrating successful collaborations. It’s for consciously investing your energy in the future. Nothing in life (not even lunch) is free. So what are you willing to give up? Time for creativity? Cash for peace of mind? Revenge for starting fresh? You’re way behind on your correspondences but don’t be afraid to pick things up where you abandoned them
Since December, inspiration has surrounded you but still, listlessness remains. Jupiter moves into Pisces on the 13th and pulls you out of inertia. The data you’ve been collecting hasn’t been for nothing. Time to integrate, write the harmonies.
Scorpio
This lunation has you looking at everyone else. Checking the mirror. Barreling as ever toward others’ needs. She wants a word. They need your help. The interview is postponed. As always, you listen to the request. But is it necessary to follow up? The answer can just be “No.” “No, thank you.” “Have a nice day.” Taurus is your opposite. What you worship in a reflection. You want that sweetness for yourself. You want to feel like a bull rolling in the dense, verdant pasture. A flower crown in your hair. Plumpness as reward. How can you reach this kind of equilibrium while remaining sharp like a soldier? What conversations do you need to start? This isn’t about tying up loose ends or reconciling accounts of the past. Sign the contract. Begin together. Together can mean whatever you want it to mean but say what you’re thinking out loud. Our ears are open.
If anything needs to be wrapped up, it’s all the growth (or the undergrowth) you’ve been doing at home. Privately. Whether you are sowing seeds or digging up weeds, that work reaches a (temporary) conclusion as Jupiter moves into Pisces on the 13th. You can’t keep expanding without pleasure. Smell the flowers. Taste the negroni. Take a chance on happiness.
Sagittarius
To be a healer, you must be patient and resilient. You must show up everyday again and again and do the work. Work that is so often futile. A tiny step toward an unattainable goal. This new moon falls in your sixth house. What the ancients dubbed the “house of war.” Today, we think of it more like chores, routines, admin. Contributions to health. Not illness but dis-ease. Slouching toward agreement. Maintenance is always necessary. This new moon is for getting yourself back on track. You’ve suffered some setbacks this year and though your little corner of the world has expanded, you’re not exactly where you thought you’d be. So what do you really want to be doing everyday? What donuts could you make for eternity without any complaints? (and do you want to set the yeast overnight or rise with the birds in the morning?) Consider what needs to go into the shop to get fixed and what needs to go on the curb.
Jupiter moves into Pisces on the 13th which clears up a lot of stress you’ve been feeling re: your living situation. Or maybe some fossilized family dynamics are ready to get melted down for candle wax. This is massive joy. But it’s private. You’re growing and changing and maybe nobody knows about it. That’s cool.
Capricorn
This new moon is fertile for you, Capricorn. Some might say it’s pregnant with possibility. Romantic invitations, creative downloads and the joy of lying on a shag rug, knocking back glasses of orange wine. You’re connecting with your inner child by accepting the simplicity of delight. Hanging onto this kind of pleasure requires a dualistic approach. A multi-pronged mission. The sun and moon are in steady Taurus but their ruler Venus is in Gemini. What research needs to be done? Is a tasting menu in order? Or maybe a trip to the library to pick up a heavy tome on the history of grapes. How do you want to keep yourself pleasantly occupied? What’s on your summer bucket list? The method can be madness: silly and divine. Laugh as you process.
Jupiter’s trip through Aquarius since December has gotten you back in touch with what it means to earn. Expanding your resources hasn’t meant simply sitting back and watching your worth increase. The giant, gaseous planet dips into Pisces on the 13th which heralds great news for quick trips. Communications and conversations expand. You’re about to see yourself in a cornucopia of contexts. But which one makes the most sense? Experimentation is messy but you need to keep doing it.
Aquarius
This new moon asks you to look closer at what’s right in front of you. Investigate that shiny piece of lapis lazuli that you acquire on a whim at the “witch” “store” “upstate”. Is it cracked? Was it cracked when you bought it? Or have you just been living a higher impact life? When you’re in the center of the storm, you don’t notice the debris hanging out at your feet or on the bottom of your purse or the floor of your car. This lunation is in Taurus. Taurus is arguably the most fixed of the fixed signs. You are arguably the least fixed of the fixed signs. What that really is, is a misunderstanding of the difference between water and air. You want mind stasis; Taurus wants body stasis. What roots are you ready to plant? What dirt needs to be scrubbed? This new moon is for accepting that things can’t stay the same forever and still staying for awhile.
With Jupiter at the anaretic (final) degree of your sign as this lunation perfects, you’re playing the role of a professor at the end of a grueling semester. Your students have heard you but can they carry your message out into the world? You’ll revisit this guru complex again in the Fall. But for now, focus on H(aving).A.G(reat).S(ummer). Jupiter moves into Pisces and your house of treats on the 13th making sure you’re—at the very least—fed.
Pisces
Whether you’re making a map or translating a poem, what you are untangling is circumstance. Taurus is your third house: the place of the goddess. The moon always comes back to where she began. This is where we return as we spin our thoughts and release our web. Everything is familiar here: schedule, group chats, commutes. What environmental standards do you wish to continue? And what’s ready to become irrelevant? You gave up that second shot of espresso so you can give whatever this is up too. It doesn't have to be such a dilemma. Let this lunation be about setting yourself up for pleasant daily voyages. What’s exciting is what’s on the horizon. Literally: lemon water. This is the place of pattern-making. Noticing cycles and becoming a part of them. What do you already have on hand to quilt your life?
Jupiter enters your sign on the 13th. A homecoming at last. For the world and especially for you. Since the Winter Solstice—The Great Conjunction—it’s felt like everyone’s hanging out without you. Like you got left behind. Cursed to catch up on homework from 2018 that everyone else got to skip. Don’t forget that work you did in solitude but hit the ground running with this burst of confidence all the same. For the next few months, you have the aux cable. Blast your playlist.
