Today’s New Moon in Sagittarius is by no means a panacea, but it does give us something we really need right now: hope. The New Moon goes exact at 5:57 PM EST and five minutes later, at 6:02 PM EST, Jupiter—the ruler of Sagittarius—stations direct in Pisces. This is a moment of cosmic elegance so sweet that it feels like the universe is playing a practical joke on us. I actually gasped in delight when I saw this New Moon/Jupiter direct mashup—and if you know me, you know that isn’t something that I do on a regular basis / it’s usually only because of something this niche/nerdy. When a planet stations direct, it is, from our little human POV, at a complete standstill in the sky. While the symphony resolves to rest, Jupiter sings out. In this moment, we get Jupiter in surround sound.
Jupiter is the planet of abundance, expansion and (in many cases) excess, but it’s also the planet of relief. Jupiter wants us to ideate, to challenge norms, to chase our wildest dreams, but also wants us to take our shoes off and rest our feet while we indulge whatever this fantasy is. The first step to getting out of survival mode, to coming back to life after a period of feeling numb, is to fantasize. A little delusion as a treat. I see this New Moon as a dip in the hot tub. Libations are flowing. Vibes are amazing. Something random is playing on the speakers like “Adore You” from Miley Cyrus’ 2013 meltdown Bangerz. (on that note, 1. Happy Solar Return to Miley, one of our Sagittarius pop star queens and 2. I actually heard “Adore You” at a coffee shop the other day and was stunned by the barista’s audacity to turn it UP). This New Moon is the Scarlett Johansson dancing in A Marriage Story meme. It’s a bright spot in a gloomy time. Pure abandon suits for now. We’ll figure out the details later.
(To note: Scarlett Johannson’s Solar Return was 11/22, yet another Sagiterrorist.)
I want to reiterate: We’ll figure out the details later is something important to keep in mind. Because today, there isn’t just a New Moon in Sagittarius, but 6 of the 7 traditional planets are in mutable signs. The Sun, the Moon, Mercury and Venus are all in Sagittarius, Mars is retrograde in Gemini, and Jupiter is in Pisces. The ancients called mutables the double bodied signs because of their commitment not only to duality but to containing multitudes. There isn’t one thing about this New Moon, there’s many.
Over the next few weeks (through the Full Moon in Gemini on December 7th), we’ll reach the halfway point of Mars retrograde as Mercury, Venus and finally the Sun face off with Mars in Gemini. These oppositions mark the “full moon” phase of Mars’ synodic cycle, where we see the results and consequences of whatever we’ve put our energy into since October 12, 2021 (when Mars last met the Sun). With this opposition happening in Gemini and Sagittarius, we’re definitely at a crossroads. There’s a ton of information, but to keep going, we somehow need more of it. Gemini and Sagittarius are opposite signs, and while I often find them to be two peas in a pod and the most similar of any of the opposing signs, their mutability also makes them shapeshifters. Gemini is gossip girl while Sagittarius is an alchemist deep in the woods without an iPhone. Both do it all for the experience, and would do it again. This New Moon lets us imagine the best possible outcome. Before we prepare for the worst, we’re allowed to hope for the best. But still, with changeability as the norm, we’re also scrambling to figure out an alternate plan. Taking a hard left at the crossroads if you will. Changing direction isn’t inherently positive or inherently negative. But, I think we could all use a laugh and some fun. So what your plans got derailed? Now, you can flaunt how well you improvise.
Today’s New Moon is at 1º Sagittarius in the Sagittarius I Decan which the Golden Dawn called Swiftness and associated with the Tarot’s 8 of Wands. To me, the 8 of Wands is freedom—the inspired state of living lightly, with few possessions, and having the ability to pack up and go whenever you please. When what we hope happens is aligned with what can happen, well, things happen quite quickly. My Sagittarius college BFF has his sun in this decan (he who famously told me, "to prepare ramen requires NOTHING but patience, and i think you have none." — Sagittarius really is the most hilarious sign, without trying). Sagittarius seems flighty, but always appears in the nick of time, just when you actually need them.
This New Moon, I hope you find relief in sudden changes of plans.
I hope you bask in the glow of random adventure.
I hope you find a bright sunny spot to plant your next great idea.
We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re definitely having a cute excursion along the way.
xoxo Jaime
Quick horoscopes follow for each sign. Read for your rising sign to get the most accurate take on what’s “actually” “happening.” Read for your Sun (if you’re born during the day), or your Moon (if you’re born at night) if you’d like a second opinion. Take what makes sense and leave what doesn’t. These horoscopes are meant to be found.
My books are open through the new year! I’d love to sit with you, hold your hand through some exciting or rocky terrain, and help you gain clarity on what’s to come.
Sagittarius
This New Moon is for reinvention. It’s not that you’re not open to change, you just got comfortable where you are. Nothing wrong with that. The blue eyeshadow looks good on you! But this is a moment for flexing a different image especially when it comes to how you show up in your closest relationships. Let the world know you’re in love.
Capricorn
This New Moon is for rest. It’s not that you don’t know how to take care of yourself but running yourself ragged is no longer the look. I get it—you work in marketing, you’re hosting your entire family from out of town. Do your work. But you can also have a cheeky ice cream cone and ignore all non-urgent communication. Set your alarm an hour later than planned. You deserve it.
Aquarius
This New Moon is for connection. You have a thriving network of friends and though you’re having a good time, it’s almost as if you’ve been in a social rut. Seeing the same people. That changes today. Inspiration is at the art show, the concert, an immaculately hosted holiday party. That old friend you miss? Give her a call.
Pisces
This New Moon is for exploring opportunities. You’re constantly complaining about not liking your job, so now’s the time to actually get with it and look for a new one. Something sexy. Something aligned. It’s not a reckless pivot, it’s a necessary change. You’re the one writing your story, so start acting like it.
Aries
This New Moon is for sharing your ideas. Whether you’re waxing poetic at the family Thanksgiving table or writing a master’s thesis or holed away finally reading Anna Karenina, it’s no longer cute to hide how smart you are. Knowing the truth can alienate us from those who just don’t get it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth pursuing.
Taurus
This New Moon is for compromise. Fun compromise. Your relationships and collaborations have been growing rapidly or stuck in a deadlock. Both are really about you and not about what you’re building together. Sharing feels so prickly and precious but really it should be a joy. It’s a risk to be comfortable in another’s arms. It’s a risk to lose control. Let go.
Gemini
This New Moon is for admiring the sunset. It’s for finding some humor in admitting defeat. The relationships you can always rely on are steady as a rock and the ones that have dissolved are in the ocean now, let them fade away. Silly contracts and riotous agreements are forged under this lunation. Skip the full write up and pinky swear on it. Make it cute.
Cancer
This New Moon is for maintenance. It’s for laughing until your stomach hurts while cleaning up around the house. It’s for feeling so proud of yourself for sticking to the simplest habits. Give yourself a sticker. You deserve a few of them. It won’t always feel this easy to get through the daily toil, but you deserve a little levity in your day. Capture these moments on film. Write it all down.
Leo
This New Moon is for taking a huge risk. One that will be a wild story to tell in the future. Hop on a plane, roll the dice, kiss that guy from your hometown who’s making eyes across the bar. This isn’t forever. It’s a fling. A memory. In the future, you’ll be able to say I did that, and know that you can indeed do anything.
Virgo
This New Moon is for nesting. Nesting the way you want to nest. Sure, you have guests on the way, but why not play your favorite vinyl and rearrange all the furniture? You’re getting in touch with your roots but in your own way. Family photo albums become psychedelic collages. Bask in the glow of the foundation you’re building.
Libra
This New Moon is for telling stories. You gain so much meaning and joy from your neighborhood and close friends, the things you do and people you see everyday. Conversations flow freely under this lunation as your usual charm is even more magnified. Take the spotlight for your folklore. Your words really do heal.
Scorpio
This New Moon is for trusting the inherent value of who you already are. 2020 and 2021 were definitely a dip in both your assets and your self esteem, but you’re actually doing a lot better these days thank you very much. Gifts are nice but nothing compares with being kind to yourself. Bottle some laughter to save for a rainy day.
