"God gave me a voice to sing with, and when you have that, what other gimmick is there?" -Whitney Houston
hallo bbz,
This summer has been one of constant roadblocks and simultaneous breakthroughs. Upheavals hit dead-ends yet limits become paths to innovation. Yes, our struggles might tell a compelling story but so do our victories. This brings me to the topic at hand: what's going on with this weekend's New Moon in Leo, which goes exact at 9:50 am ET on Sunday the 8th?
This New Moon falls at 16º Leo. Leo is of course ruled by the Sun but in this part of the sky both Jupiter and Saturn have a curatorial voice as well. Jupiter wants us to test our luck. Saturn wants us to enforce precious boundaries. Both planets are currently in Aquarius, where Saturn puts social contexts under scrutiny and Jupiter takes on the role of the skeptical philosopher. (The last time Saturn was in Aquarius brought the birth of the internet / browsers became prolific / why we're here today).
This part of Leo is a little bit classique and a little bit punk (Leo is the punk, tbh).
This part of Leo is the intersection of Betsey Johnson and Louis Vuitton, both born with the sun in this part of the sky. (So was Whitney Houston. August 2nd - 11th is the sweet spot).
What comes up now is a reverberation of stuff we've already been through. On July 13th, Venus and Mars met in Leo, just a few degrees away from where this New Moon is taking place. With that aspect, our desires were redirected and relationships were renewed or destroyed. Both planets were frustrated after a sobering encounter with Saturn and an exciting download from Uranus around July 4th.
Then on August 1st, 2nd and again on the 6th, the Sun (our vitality) and Mercury (our mind) had their own encounters with Saturn and then Uranus, allowing our thoughts to catch up with our hearts. Now with this weekend's new moon, Luna—our cosmic translator—faces off with Saturn, clashes with Uranus and goes into the heart of the Sun. The final pieces of the puzzle are pulled together as our body catches up to our spirit, our mind and our desires. The stress is fading but the work is still to come.
This New Moon makes the case for bold, raucous experimentation. We wish we could be pragmatic. That we were the type of people who thought of a plan, then wrote an outline, and then executed it. But the path to something wonderful, worthwhile or VIABLE is so much messier. Sure: Leo is a fixed sign. Mantra, repetition, and affirmation are Leo's love language. We want a reliable plan that carries us to victory. Teammates we can trust. Adoring fans. But this portion of the year—Lammas-tide, the lazy hazy crazy days of summer—is when, despite our best efforts, everything must change. "What goes up must come down." Sunsets come sooner. The hours of light are decreasing everyday. Things are exceptional now but what about the lean times? Energy comes in bursts and unfortunately, we have to make a decision before we know the outcome. What's known has already been decided. This is the unknown's domain.
This New Moon is a good time to remember:
-Even when things have been rough, you don't have to start from scratch.
-If you are starting from scratch, desire provides context.
(Volcanoes erupt so we must move through the debris)
-Knowing your actions gets you through the scene.
-The cliché: Closing one door opens another one
-Sitting with longing much longer than is comfortable lets it wash away or inspire.
Either way, it's a victory.
Horoscopes follow for each sign. Read for your rising or your sun sign. (For whatever reason, horoscopes for my sun sign really hit lately! Going to write something about why.) If you're feeling generous and want to tip me, you can do so here or @Jaime-Wright on Venmo. I really appreciate it if you do! My books for readings are closed!I'll be back with more words & some updates at the full moon! In the meantime, check out this workshop I'm doing on 8/19 for the Full Moon in Aquarius with my friend Whitney Will of Starhearth Astrology (!)

Leo
Obligations to others have been keeping you from expressing yourself fully, even as your public world shifts under seismic pressure. Though you have an inherent need (not want, need) for validation and reciprocity, having to negotiate and commit to something unglamorous isn't so bad. It's just a bummer. Your freak flag isn't flying but you're always gonna shine. This new moon lets you take the wheel and make a few selfish (and hey why not irresponsible) decisions. Consequences are unavoidable but they only fall on your shoulders. You're getting to the age where every hangover isn't necessarily worth the night out that preceded it, but! the photos are going to slay. Enjoy yr cosmic cheat day so when it's over you're ready to joyfully make some difficult decisions.
Virgo
Breaking a bad habit feels impossible today but it must be done. You want to take a break from social media but there's always something sweet that tempts you back, helping you to blissfully ignore the scroll's negative effects on your mental and physical health. When you don't check your phone first thing in the morning, you do feel better! Your lungs are clear! Your gut is regulated! This New Moon challenges you to take a hiatus from the void while ALSO shifting your mindset and sticking to a routine. There's WORK to be done behind the scenes. Meditation is labor. You can't waste away on this retreat watching Real Housewives again. Sit with the difficulty of actual silence. Extended nothing. What comes up on the screen when you refuse to start scrolling?
Libra
This New Moon is screaming for you to drop some major parasocial activity. All those friends you've never met. More than anyone, you're attracted to the aesthetic of it all. That celebrity is hilarious and that influencer's way with words is divine but when you hit unfollow, you won't even remember why you liked them in the first place. That's the funny thing about shutting the door to a context that you were never part of anyway: it's complete and conclusive and frankly, divine. Spending time in the sun with a friend you haven't seen for many moons is wonderful. It also makes you nauseous, reminding you of how alienated you've allowed yourself to become. You don't fit in the way you used to and that's ok. Visit someone else's garden and dream up a tomato vine of your own.
Scorpio
This new moon is about allowing those inevitable tectonic shifts (you know the ones) to shape your world. Giving up control is terrifying but it must be done if you're going to keep moving. Staying where you are isn't an option. But remember: it's your world; not anyone else's. You don't have to give up your space to find the perfect relationship. You don't have to choose between a private kingdom and letting someone else inside. What belongs in your life can shift to fit your fluctuations. Time isn't real but cycles are, carrying us through it all. Think of what's happening now as not a spotlight on your story but more of a detailed walk through of what's to come. When did you forget that you had this much space to live? When did you lower the volume to a whisper? Time to turn it up.
Sagittarius
Resistance, renewal and repurposing has been your whole thing this summer. A hasty move in a rusty van. Milestones uncovered and recovered and laid to rest. Being well is a constant struggle because your needs are always changing. But this new moon lets you pull yourself of the familiar and into the spiritual. Symbols speak louder than words. Rituals are more trusted than people. Dust off your books and kickstart your metaphysical studies! Push out of your comfort zone despite all the interference. Precautions are necessary but isn't that better than the alternative? Stagnation? The GREAT WORK is ready to pour out of your gut with all of your daily struggles serving as inspiration. Spill what needs spilling. No one else can do it for you.
Capricorn
Clinging to your secrets is only raising the volume. Who you think you're hiding the information from can hear you loud and clear. This New Moon is for pulling the skeletons out of the closet and donating them to charity. You don't have to dance with your fears, just release them into the wild. Someone else wants that tshirt from 2008 and you don't like that band anymore anyway. Your taste (which was already high) has leveled up again but reminder: your funds are limited. Finishing means you have to edit and scale down. Besides, what you so desperately need to complete your latest lqqk is probably already hanging in your closet. Don't be so dramatic. This isn't about goodbyes or even about letting go. It's about taking on another debt that's actually worth the time and effort.
Aquarius
There's always a tornado warning in your private life (or your house) these days and yet, your duty is to remain calm and still. Per usual, you're the claim assessor, the social auditor, the antique salesman. This New Moon takes you to that squishy, uncomfortable, vulnerable place of relationship. Who's allowed to share your pain? Who's proud to know every part of you? Who wants to know even the ugliest truths that you won't reveal to the public? You find comfort and reward in sharing your heart these days. It's embarrassing yet it's the only truth. Some knots are ready to be untied (especially at the coming full moon). For now, tease the promo for the periodical that is your heart and see who's ready to subscribe.
Pisces
This New Moon is for acknowledging—nay—celebrating your efforts. All of the tiny things you do everyday. Those things that seemingly add up to nothing. This is the foundation of your life. The magical realism you crave in the world at large, the mutability you desire in your home, the reliability you seek in a partner all come back to a fierce sense of vitality for you. You cry at the littlest things because you really think they're beautiful, worthy of being seen and heard and known. You really believe that every shrug of a shape has meaning. Don't deny yourself that holy mundane. Cheering what's small is what's going to remind you that you're here and now and alive. You're not disappearing; you're waiting in the wings.
Aries
Lava flows out of a volcano destroying an entire town. That's how pent up your inner child is at this New Moon in Leo. This lunation is for calling in your heart's desire, addressing your attitude for play and getting so much closer to what feels good. Inside, outside and in-between. Your rage could fill thousands of balloons with hot air and you'd like to do just that and float away with the pain. But this is also a potent moment to sit with sweetness and discuss the erotics of patience. Sweetness. Patience. Passion. Stillness isn't your method but what about luxury? Appreciating the quality of what you already have keeps you from focusing on what you can't afford.
Taurus
You didn't expect to be finding so much pleasure in a time where you're mostly stuck at home or confined to a lush, green field with little other stimulation. But the tiny world you've cultivated isn't so bad. At least, that's how you feel today. Blessed by the verdant earth and the fruits of your stillness. Your public persona has been debuted which means you can no longer deny that it's legitimate. Your success is no longer an ad for a rave on a streetlamp that you find after making a scene at the bar. It's a valid business, incorporated as an LLC. Your friends don't recognize you and you barely recognize yourself. But today, you are quiet, comforted, held by whoever you've chosen as family. Have the eggs scrambled or anyway you like.
Gemini
You can save the world some other time. Pinky promise. Today's New Moon asks you to get in your car, roll down the windows and blast your favorite album from 2009 (hopefully your car has a CD player or you have one at home. This, my friends, is not a moment for Spotify). BIG PICTURE LIFE STUFF has been taking its toll on you. Institutions have lifted you and have also betrayed your trust. Like a crime of passion. New enemies crop up constantly. The ones who are fun (cancelled celebs, trolls having their 15 minutes of fame) and the ones who cause pain (ex-best friends and fallen lovers). Cuddle up to your nostalgic side and remember who you were before the world got big. Stretch your body like a cat, take your shoes off and embrace the lake. You're free! / you're free! / you're free!

I promise this comes together at the end— So, the Gossip Girl revival on HBO Max is set in a surveillance state. "Gossip Girl" (an anonymous digital purveyor of intrigue and scandal...who remained a mystery in the OG series) is identified in the first five minutes of the first episode as The Teachers At The School. The teachers are using Gossip Girl as a device to keep the students—who are too IG famous to care about decorum or Billy Budd or "graduating"—in line. Every episode, the teachers are faced with a moral quandary: should they continue with "the (blue check verified) experiment"? They know what they're doing isn't ethical but they're addicted to the power anyway. It gives them purpose. I think you're in a similar (though hopefully less anti-social) dilemma. Having a secret or a debt or a commitment is your obsession. Who are you without your terrible obligations? This New Moon asks you to dig your own crown jewels out of storage, leaving everyone else to their own miserable fire.
