Out of all the work I do, I love writing most of all. moon missives is approaching its 7th (!!) year—a full Saturn square!—in 2023, and it brings me so much joy to see the community around it grow over time. I’d love to dedicate even more energy to this space next year and the best way to assure that happens is by getting a paid subscription for yourself or a friend.
And now for what you opened this email for—
Oh baby. Tonight? There’s a Full Moon in Gemini. This Full Moon is a gut punch. Not a single subtle revelation. Everything that’s been hidden comes kicking, screaming, or even—in typical Gemini fashion—giggling to the surface. It’s quite a shift from where we were at at the beginning of this lunar cycle. The New Moon in Sagittarius on November 23rd was a sweet little jolt, and now, two weeks later, we’re deep in a frenzied all nighter. Too many Red Bulls have been consumed. Insomnia and restlessness are prevalent. Thoughts are whirling. Brains are buzzing. Nervous systems at capacity. We’re ready for take off. We’re ready for breakdown. We’re ready to go.
To be fair, Gemini Full Moons are always frenetic. Gemini is the mutable air sign after all. The sign of the award-winning journalist, trendsetting flaneur and local gossip girl. Gemini is the kid with a million questions. There’s no natural end point to a Gemini’s line of questioning because once they get an answer, that answer becomes a key to another winding rabbithole of intellectual exploration. Gemini Full Moons always bring the best memes, the wildest jokes and the most hilarious online discourse. But this year’s Full Moon is a special brand of chaotic because it’s not only a Full Moon, it’s kind of a double Full Moon because we’re also at the “Full Moon” point of the Mars cycle. Yes, tonight’s Full Moon in Gemini is exactly conjunct Mars, taking place less than two hours before Mars makes its once in two year opposition to the Sun— the culmination point of both the two month Mars retrograde and the two year Mars cycle. There’s a lot on the line, and yet, everything is also unfolding as it was meant to. Despite all the noise, what we’re supposed to do with it isn’t clear, and that’s actually OK.
This Full Moon reminds me of a pandemonious school play. One presented in a cafetorium of screaming kids with withering attention spans. Gaudy sets, ill fitting costumes and breakout performances by the little ones who can belt to the back of the room. To make a very niche reference, it reminds me specifically of the ending of Meredith Monk’s 1988 film Book of Days—a section titled “Churchyard Entertainment” which depicts a pageant in the town square. It’s random, dizzying and yet, somehow, sums up everything we’ve seen to that point.
Plans we’ve been reviewing, reconfiguring or re-strategizing since early September—and more seriously since late October—are made clear with this lunation. This is when we learn what this Mars retrograde is really about. Things are not moving like clockwork. There is a lot of dramaturgy. Projects that began back in October 2021—when Mars last met the Sun, Mars’ “new moon”—peak or fold now. Remember this is a Full Moon in Gemini, the sign of the twins. In most twin mythology—Cain and Abel, Romulus and Remus—one of the twins doesn’t survive. Despite our intentions, some of the things we’ve tried are failures. That’s OK. Don’t try to hide from the failure. Go to the show. Watch failure dance.
This Full Moon is also in conversation with Jupiter and Neptune in Pisces. We’re now enjoying the final two weeks of effusive Jupiter’s extended stay in Pisces where it has amplified the hazy delusions of Neptune’s longerm transit there. Confusion, delusion, and conspiracy theories are at an all time high. There’s some potential deception in this Full Moon moment, and even more potential for anxiety. The Golden Dawn called the middle part of Gemini (this Full Moon goes exact at 16º) Despair or Cruelty. The 9 of Swords is the tarot card associated with this decan—a card that depicts, in the illustration by Pamela Colman Smith, a man lying restless in bed, his hands in his face, nine swords hovering over his head. But are the swords really there? Or are they just in his mind? Before you rush into anything, project onto anyone, or convince yourself that all your prayers have been answered, remember that everything truly is not what it seems right now. Tread carefully but don’t look away.
Mercury—the ruler of Gemini and thus of Mars and this Full Moon—entered Capricorn yesterday (12/6). If the journey of Capricorn is one of building a kingdom, the early degrees of the sea goat’s sign are all about prospecting: scouting the land and choosing the perfect location to break ground. Though Capricorns are known for being logical, this process is usually less about the mind and more about the heart. Though this Full Moon is a culmination of more than one long term cycle, it’s also the beginning of another series of events. Due to an upcoming retrograde, Mercury will remain in Capricorn through the end of Mars’ retrograde in January 2023. Mercury stations retrograde in the late degrees of Capricorn on December 29th, Mars stations direct in Gemini on January 12th, and then Mercury stations direct in the early degrees of Capricorn on January 18th. The two planets cannot see each other in the sky, but are in conversation nonetheless, trading off symphony solos and guiding us through the choppy waters of 2022 to fresh horizons and challenges for 2023.
Today’s Full Moon is a doozy, but don’t let the overwhelm lead to a hasty decision. Today we get the truth but that doesn’t mean we have to act on it. What to do will be clearer once Mercury and Mars go direct. If you can, wait until then to set your course, then wait. Untangling takes time.
Horoscopes follow for each sign. Read for your rising sign to get the most accurate take on what’s “actually” “happening.” Read for your Sun (if you’re born during the day), or your Moon (if you’re born at night) if you’d like a second opinion. Take what makes sense and leave what doesn’t. These horoscopes are meant to be found.
My books are open through the end of January 2023! I’d love to sit with you, hold your hand through some exciting or rocky terrain, and help you gain clarity on what’s to come.
Gemini
This Full Moon ignites your passion while also illuminating your pain points around image, identity and personal health. From now through early 2023, you’re going to be constantly negotiating your boundaries and sticking up for your own well being, needs and desires, despite the constant influx of everyone else’s opinions. Sure they have a point, but that doesn’t mean you have to attach yourself to it. Not again. Not this time. What creative projects were you dreaming up back in October 2021? What romances were just taking shape? Have you been successful integrating these things into your daily life? Have you introduced them to your friends and community? While something might be meeting its natural end, another adventure is just beginning. Where do you want to settle by October of next year?
Cancer
Things have not been easy for you lately, Cancer, and this Full Moon highlights how deep some of this work really goes. You’re playing in the shadow state, frustrated that your dreams can’t seem to make the leap off the vision board into reality. From now through early 2023, you’re going to be tasked with tending to your partnerships and support system as much as you’ve tended to your hidden side. Who do you want to stay beside you on this journey and who are you ready to let go? Think back to October 2021: a moment of groundbreaking for you. Plans took root, but were only seedlings. How has your retreat affected your career and your creativity? Not everything grows at once. Pruning is necessary. What do you want to birth by October of next year?
Leo
This Full Moon reminds you that you do in fact have friends in high places, while also reminding you who your real friends are, for better or for worse. From now through early 2023, you’re going to be trying to please the crowd while tending to your own daily needs. You can’t skip watering the plants or tidying the house or going to those appointments any longer. But you also can’t keep using the grind as an excuse to avoid your real dreams. Back in October 2021, you broke ground on a new skill, upgraded the technology, and made a new best friend. How has your vision and mind expanded since then? Have you felt stuck or inspired? By October of next year, you’ll be able to plant your garden. What do you need to learn before laying down those seeds?
Virgo
This Full Moon asks you to own how powerful you really are, no matter how terrifying or humiliating that may be. From now through early 2023, you’re going to be integrating more creativity and generosity into your professional and public life. You don’t love to show everyone your silly side (at least not the people who make the big decisions), but a sense of humor is required to conquer this moment. Back in October 2021, you set some challenging goals around income, resources and feeling secure. Who have you reached out to for patronage and support? How have you thrived or failed at communicating your needs? You can’t win everyone over. It’s OK to say goodbye (for now) to some relationships. By October 2023, you get to choose your own adventure in a new way.
Libra
This Full Moon ignites your desire to grow and learn, while also illuminating your pain points around how resources have held you back from adventure. From now through early 2023, you’re going to be creating a course of study, planning your itineraries and diving into spirituality that connects you more to the land, your ancestors and your own personal rootedness. Back in October 2021, a fire was lit in your heart to take better care of yourself, to further explore your identity and to commit to personal happiness. What lovers and friends and connections have grown stronger since you’ve made this commitment? What resources have fallen away? By October of next year, you will be so much more confident that you have the tools to make this work. Stay in the process.
Scorpio
This Full Moon ignites your desire to help people, while also illuminating your pain points around helping yourself. From now through early 2023, you’re going to be further pruning the roster of who and what you keep in your day to day life. You’re not going to build your schedule around empty promises this time. You want to share the most sensitive parts of your soul so you need a safe space to do that. Back in October 2021, you had a painful moment of releasing control. How has your sense of self grown from that loss? How have you changed the way you work and care for yourself since then? By October of next year, you’re going to be in a whole new era of you. Back in October 2021, you decided that nothing would stop you from making friends, building your audience and making huge strides in your industry. How has this decision brought more joy and pleasure into your life? What fears and anxieties have tried to sabotage your growth? October of next year brings a new phase that begins with a cathartic release. Keep noticing what’s reflected back at you.
Capricorn
This Full Moon finds you struggling or thriving in the chaos that is building your life: a neverending to do list combined with difficult obligations and a tendency to overheat. From now through early 2023, you’re doing a delicate dance between maintaining your image and being a human. Both are (unfortunately) necessary. Back in October 2021, you launched into a new era of your career and public image. Since then, you’ve been trying to maintain a balance between your public and private life, wondering if you need to branch out more to make your dreams into a reality. How have you settled and how have you grown? By October of next year, you will be confident that you have the community and audience to support what you want to do.
Aquarius
This Full Moon is one of obsessive crushes, burning desires and aggressive play. Your kids are off the walls. Your dates are off the hook. You’re having fun, but wondering when you’ll have the opportunity again to have a little space. Everyone wants a piece of your heart right now but that doesn’t mean you have to share it. Through early 2023, you’re not creating in a void, but creating for the void. Think about the goals you set last Fall for teaching, travel and expanding your mind. What new mentors have you made along the way? What threads have you left hanging in the process? By October of next year, you’ll be entering a new era of confidence in your career. Reach out to the people who want to know all about it.
Pisces
This Full Moon is restless for everyone, but it’s an especially chaotic moment for you, Pisces. The very foundation of your life is up for review and what you’re finding is that where you are isn’t checking all your boxes. From now through early 2023, you’re going to be doing a ton of connecting and networking in an effort to build your foundation. How have you expanded your support and patronage since October 2021? Has this made you feel more or less secure in your wisdom? Over the next year, it’s necessary that you build up the confidence to share your research. What do you need to publish the poem or teach the class? Start there.
Aries
Today’s Full Moon is one for running a marathon and sobbing on your best friend’s shoulder. It’s both/and. From now through early 2023, it’s necessary for you to share your little projects and pieces of your heart. We don’t need to see the final product. We want to see the process! Back in October 2021, you began a new personal era that corresponded with the end of a relationship. How has this changed your sense of self? Have you found it easier or more difficult to be vulnerable? By October of next year, you will be entering new partnerships of transformation (not transaction). The first step is embracing failure and meeting the world willing to share.
Taurus
Today’s Full Moon in Gemini illuminates your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to feeling secure. From now through early 2023, you’re going to be reconciling your confidence in your long term growth with your day to day struggle to feel like enough. Treats and splurges can be quick fixes but you actually don’t need more. Back in October 2021, you committed to new routines, fitness plans and work schedules. How have these energetic shifts affected your relationships? Are you more or less OK with letting go and losing control? By October of next year, you’re going to be ready to sign on the dotted line. What do you need to cultivate before then? Is is more money or less nonsense?
