During the weekend of a blood moon lunar eclipse in 2016, my dear friend David and I went to see Jack Ferver’s Chambre at the New Museum. If you’re unfamiliar with Jack Ferver’s work, they make dance pieces that are actually the best plays I’ve ever seen. I would describe Jack as the Lana Del Rey of downtown performance, always throwing themself head first into vulnerability. That weekend in 2016—as Jack finished another monologue about mental health and American decay—David turned to me and said, with deadpan enthusiasm, “Theatre is SO easy.” To explain the layers of this mantra would be an entire essay. But I want to focus on its simplicity. This phrase made its way into the “text” of some of David and my performance pieces over the years. But it also became a hopeful mantra for everyday life. One I try to channel when I’m jumping into something terrifying headfirst. “Relationships are SO easy.” “Money is SO easy.” “Lawyers are SO easy,” etc.
This week’s astrology requires having a sense of humor as we enter the fray. Modern life is SO easy.
As this note hits your inbox, Uranus has officially moved into Gemini. The last time the planet of rebellion entered the sign of the twins was in 1941. We’re at a major turning point. The radical twinning has officially begun. The assignment is to move out of binaries and toward multitudes: a task that is both chaotic and empowering. Uranus entering Gemini is a very fresh influence. Very modern. Gemini is the mutable air sign, known for curiosity and constant motion. The change we’ve experienced with Uranus in Taurus since 2018 has been so fraught, but Uranus in Gemini is bringing fluid evolution. There is something easy about it. What’s interesting is that as we preview the future, we’re also faced with a reality check, one that shines a light on legacy. That reality check is the full moon in Capricorn, which peaks on Thursday, July 10.
I love a full moon in an earth sign. I love a full moon in Capricorn. Earth sign full moons always occur during water sign seasons. Feeling our feelings is a process that needs structure. Earth signs deliver that structure. But that’s not to say that earth signs make feeling those feelings easy.
In a lunar sense, water and fire are the elements that are most expressive with their emotions. Water signs shed tears while fire signs rage with passion. Air signs need to talk it out. Earth signs put their feelings into a box. Sometimes it’s a cozy box, i.e. Taurus moons excel with practical comforts. If there are no words, there is at least a blanket. Virgo moons are great at regulating through tasks. Capricorn moons have a hard won brilliance in their emotional life.
Capricorn is where the moon is said to be in exile. Capricorn moons have to learn self care the hard way, but through trial and error, often become masters of self regulation. I’ll always take advice about supplements and bath bombs and tea blends from a Capricorn moon. Even if I worry they’re more focused on optimizing their bath than luxuriating in it.
Some of my personal self care to enter this full moon in Capricorn week has been making Hetty Lui McKinnon’s Silken Tofu with Spicy Soy Dressing with some soba noodles on the side. And also finally watching Amalia Ulman’s El Planeta. A film that is perfect for Cancer season, starring Ulman and her actual mother in a kind of Grey Gardens fantasia set in coastal Spain. I loved El Planeta and I love this spicy tofu. I’m not sure there’s a food more Saturn-ruled moon than tofu: a utilitarian shape meant to soak up flavors.
What’s special about this full moon in Capricorn is that it’s the first ruled by Saturn in Aries. The moon manages our daily life and Saturn manages our long term plan. Both the moon and Saturn are out of their element in these signs. The Capricorn moon makes longevity into a daily grind while Saturn in Aries wants monumental effort to yield instant gratification. For all of us, this full moon will reveal an alternate path we might take to secure the Capricorn part of our life. In a general sense, this speaks to larger projects being managed with a beginner’s mindset. On an individual level, it speaks to how we can approach the hard work in the Capricorn part of our life with a sense of humor . Here’s how that breaks down by rising sign:
Aries - career, public life, leadership
Taurus - education, travel plans, spiritual philosophies
Gemini- shared resources, debts, loss, collaboration
Cancer - partnerships, contracts, intimate relationships
Leo - daily work, day jobs, managing health
Virgo - pleasure, creativity, children
Libra - home, private life, legacy
Scorpio - close friends and family, communications, short trips, social media
Sagittarius - security, values, financial health
Capricorn - image, identity, personal health
Aquarius - your role in the collective, isolation, travel
Pisces - community, audience, allies
The Capricorn part of our chart went through the ringer from 2008-2024 with Pluto in Capricorn. This part of life feels lighter now, but with Saturn in Aries, it’s also feeling unruly. It can’t be managed in the typical ways. There’s no patience for the difficulties arising here. But patience along with fearless ambition is what propels the progress we’re craving.
Saturn stations retrograde on July 13. When a planet stations retrograde, it is very close to us here on Earth, and its influence is heavy and overpowering. With Saturn, this means we can no longer avoid responsibilities. Saturn is also in a very close, almost exact conjunction with Neptune. Obligations are heavy. Delusions are thick. But willpower will get us through. Plus a little Uranus in Gemini trickster brilliance to stir the pot and keep things interesting.
What’s coming up for you during this full moon week?
Remember: making things happen is SO easy.
